You must include your New Jersey driver's license number or your non-driver ID number on your voter registration form. If you don't have either of these numbers, you must include a copy of your ID with your form. If you forget, you'll need to provide ID the first time you vote in person or by absentee ballot. Acceptable forms of ID include: a driver's license or other photo identification that shows your name OR a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows your name and New Jersey address.

You don't need to provide ID if you've already voted in New Jersey at least once. If you're voting for the first time in New Jersey, and you did not include an identifying number (such as your driver's license number or your SSN on your voter registration form), then you must include a COPY of one of the following with your application: a driver's license or other photo identification that shows your name OR a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows your name and New Jersey address.

Absentee Ballots are available on Election Day, under emergency circumstances. Usually, if a voter becomes ill on Election Day or the night before, an authorized messenger can obtain an absentee ballot by court order. Contact your County Clerk (see above) if you have questions about emergency absentee ballots.

You can use the Application for Vote by Mail Ballot to put yourself on a permanent absentee voter list. You can request all elections in the current calendar year, all future November general elections, or both. (The general elections take place in even number years - 2010, 2012, etc - and include the presidential and congressional elections.) It's best to submit a new application every January to ensure that you'll receive an absentee ballot for all elections in which you are eligible to vote.

Certain tickets can be paid through the Violations Bureau while others will require you to appear before the judge. If your ticket is checked "Court Appearance Required" or the penalty amount is not listed on the statewide or local violations bureau schedules, you must appear in Court on the date listed on the complaint. You can also check this by visiting the website listed on the back of the ticket. It will tell you if you need to appear in Court or can just pay the ticket.

2. Mail your payment to the Violations Bureau using the same address (above).
3. Pay you ticket on the state website www.njmcdirect.com

If your ticket is not marked "Court Appearance Required", you may enter your plea of Not Guilty by either calling the Court at 973-+882-2700 ext. 1 or appearing at the Violations Bureau. Court Staff will then schedule your case for a conference or a trial sate depending on the charge.

Once you are assigned a Court date, all requests to adjourn that date must be made in writing to the judge. They may either be faxed to 973-882-2714 or mailed to Fairfield Municipal Court, 230 Fairfield Road, Fairfield, NJ 07004. An adjournment is not automatically granted by sending a letter. You must still appear unless you have received confirmation from Court staff that the date has been changed.

For certain charges with consequences of magnitude such as a large fine, loss of driving privileges, or incarceration you may be eligible for the Public Defender if you are financially indigent. If you can afford to hire your own attorney, you can call either the Essex County Bar Association or the New Jersey Bar Association for a referral. Court staff cannot recommend an attorney to you.

If you disagree with the judge's decision, you have the right to appeal your case to the Superior Court within 20 days of conviction. To do so you must file a notice with the Court and order a transcript of the proceeding. No. There is no basis to recognize the assumption of the partner’s last name. A legal name change must be filed with the courts and an original copy of the final judgment presented to the Office of Vital Statistics and Registry.

No. Domestic partners who wish to enter into a civil union with the same person do not need to terminate their domestic partnership. Once they have entered into the civil union, their domestic partnership will automatically terminate if it was registered in New Jersey. If it was registered outside New Jersey, the laws of that state would determine the validity of the domestic partnership following the civil union.

A civil celebrant shall be authorized to solemnize marriages or civil unions if certified by the Secretary of State.

In order to request a delayed report of marriage, you must first file an application requesting the marriage certificate to ensure the record is not on file. If the marriage occurred within the last seven years and documentary proof is available a late marriage can be recorded. If the marriage took place more than seven years ago a delayed report must be filed by providing a copy of the marriage license application and documentary proof the marriage occurred. If the marriage license application is not available, then a court order must be obtained directing the Office of Vital Statistics and Registry to place the marriage on file as a delayed record. - If the copies are being presented to a foreign country that is part of the Hague Treaty, the copies need an Apostille Seal from the New Jersey Secretary of State. The Apostille Seal can only be applied to certified copies of vital records issued from the Office of Vital Statistics and Registry.
